‘New Girl’ Zooey Deschanel Claims She Isn’t Cool

While the cute and quirky Zooey Deschanel has long been thought of as a hipster's dream, the actress swears that she's really more mainstream than we think. The star of Fox freshman hit "New Girl" and half of pop duo She & Him reveals that much of her cool quotient comes from the characters she plays. "Because I have brown hair and a low voice, I would get cast as dry, sarcastic, ironic people, which I can do, but it's just not my sense of humor," Zooey tells Allure magazine. "I'm a very positive person. I get excited easily, and I like to jump around."

Still, Zooey admits that a few of those offbeat eccentricities that audiences find so adorable are actually her own. "I've always straddled a weird line -- there's a lot of mainstream stuff that I love," she says. "At the same time, I still feel like an outsider. I'm the outsider who's on the inside."

Whether or not she's an outsider, Zooey is definitely having a moment. Besides her professional successes on her sitcom and in music, the 32-year-old has also made appearances on the big-screen, including in the recent Paul Rudd comedy "Our Idiot Brother." If she didn't have such a problem with the term, I might be tempted to call her an "it girl" for the zillionth time, which would surely amuse the actress. "At this point, it makes me laugh, because I've done that so many times: 'You're it'; 'you're not it.' What is 'it'?" Zooey asks. (She also shrugs off being referred to as "The Pinup of Williamsburg," saying that she's only visited the trendy Brooklyn neighborhood once).

Well, whatever je ne sais quoi the world believes she possesses, most everyone — from media outlets to Hollywood producers — seems to be in love with Zooey these days. Somewhere along the way on this heady journey, the star has found at least one practical tip to guide her: "I've learned to never eat in an interview," she notes. "The worst part is if you're actually meeting somebody for a potential job. I'm always like, Don't let yourself be too hungry."
