Brad Pitt muses about love in new Chanel ad

Was this Angelina Jolie's idea?

Months after the deal was announced, Brad Pitt has officially made his debut as the first male spokesman for the iconic female perfume Chanel No. 5 in a new ad campaign. In the 30-second commercial spot, which begins airing globally today, the 48-year-old actor quietly recites a poem to a mystery woman.

"It's not a journey," Pitt, who became engaged to Jolie in April, whispers. "Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear. Dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are. My luck, my fate, my fortune. Chanel No. 5. Inevitable."

The commercial, which was directed by Joe Wright, is filmed entirely in black and white, giving it an artsy feel. The father of six is casually dressed in a button-down shirt and stands still throughout the ad with his hands buried in his pockets. His styled hair and scruffy face makes us fondly remember his 1994 role as Tristan Ludlow in "Legends of the Fall." The major difference? Nearly 20 years later, Pitt's goatee is mostly gray. However, it's a bit more groomed than it has been in recent years — on some occasions he's let it get so unruly you'd think he was auditioning to become the third member of ZZ Top!

But despite looking good in the ad, Pitt's monologue falls a little flat. While one might expect that it would be mildly exciting to hear one of the biggest Hollywood heartthrobs of all time reciting poetry in his sexy Pitt voice (swoon!), he does so without much expression. Honestly, it sounds like Pitt is standing around in a dark room whispering something we don't really care about. And in these days of viral videos, this isn't one that you are immediately inspired to share — unlike the funny commercials his brother, Doug Pitt, did with Virgin Mobile.

Pitt's involvement in the new Chanel campaign was announced in May in what the company described as an effort to provide "the perspective of a man on the most feminine fragrance of all time." Andrea d'Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauty, told Women's Wear Daily, "To keep a legend fresh, you always have to change its point of view. It is the first time we've had a man speaking about a women's fragrance. We think very much that the perfume is a seduction between a man, a woman and the perfume. No. 5 is our leading fragrance, and we are willing to make the investment to keep it on that level."

At the time the deal was revealed, Pitt said, "No. 5 has always been the most iconic women's fragrance. That's what I see being the appeal of this campaign; it goes beyond the abstract of emotion or beauty to evoke what is timeless: a woman's spirit."

Okay — sure. But we still think this was totally Angelina's idea.
