‘The View’ Shakeup: Bill Wolff Out as Executive Producer

Bill Wolff is departing his post as exec producer of ABC’s “The View,” the latest shakeup on the daytime series that has had nothing but turmoil in front of and behind the camera during the past two years.

ABC has yet to line up a permanent replacement for Wolff, who will remain at the helm through the end of September to see the show through the launch of its 19th season with a revamped panel of hosts. Candi Carter, an “Oprah Winfrey Show” alum who recently joined as a consulting producer, will serve as interim showrunner until a successor is named.

Wolff joined “View” last summer after serving as exec producer of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.” His departure had been expected after the show endured a rocky first season following the retirement of its founder, Barbara Walters.

Last week, “View” unveiled its host lineup for season 19 — all new with the exception of moderator Whoopi Goldberg, who has endured the show’s ups and downs since joining in 2007. The show reached out to a familiar face in bringing back Joy Behar after a two-year absence. Raven-Symone, Paula Faris, Candace Cameron Bure and Michelle Collins round out the regular panelists.

Wolff was recruited last year to take over from founding “View” showrunner Bill Geddie, a longtime producing partner of Barbara Walters’, by Disney/ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood. But rumors circulated early on that the cable news vet did not have a strong feel for the needs of the daytime broadcast TV audience.

ABC News president James Goldston confirmed Wolff’s departure in a memo of staffers on Monday:

Team,

A few weeks ago Bill Wolff came to me with bittersweet news. After steering the ship at The View for Season 18, he had decided to move on to new opportunities.

We are all enormously grateful to Bill for his incredible leadership in re-launching the show last fall, moving The View staff and set to a new location, welcoming returning friends and new co-hosts to our View family and planning ahead for a terrific Season 19. And Bill was an upbeat, unwavering and steady hand behind the scenes in the control room and on the floor day in and day out. He leaves The View well positioned for even brighter days this fall, and I am personally grateful that over the next few weeks Bill will help ensure a smooth transition and kick off to the new season.

Today Candi Carter joins us as a consulting producer to help launch Season 19. Candi will serve as interim showrunner, working alongside our new co-executive producer Brian Teta. Candi has considerable daytime television experience, best known for her work as a senior producer and supervising producer at The Oprah Winfrey Show for over 15 years. She’s overseen a wide range of programming, from big events and musical performances to fashion and talent shows and surprise reunions. Mostly recently, she launched the Ice T and Coco talk show and executive produced a Hurricane Katrina Anniversary special and breaking news programs for BET.

Please join me in thanking Bill and wishing him the best and welcoming Candi to The View.

James
