Apparently the "Glee" writers aren't feeling the love for Sam "Trouty Mouth" Evans (Chord Overstreet). While Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) and Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.) have been promoted to series regulars, Overstreet is not so lucky.
We may see Chord on a few episodes next seasons, and it'll probably be for the purpose of wrapping up his story lines.
Although I am disappointed by this development, I can't say that I'm entirely surprised. Darren seems to be the newest "It Boy," and his character's relationship with Kurt (Chris Colfer) has inspired fans across the nation.
This is not to suggest that Chord is any less talented than Darren. Yet Darren's character has the advantage of being "socially relevant" because of the bullying and same-sex relationship angle.
Is Chord being unfairly dumped because his character was not a suitable love interest for Kurt? Or is the show just overextended with too many story lines?
Either way, I liked Sam and had hoped that his character would continue into season 3. When he first came to the show, it seemed that he would be another mini-Finn (Cory Monteith), but he's grown to be a complex and interesting character who didn't the mold of conventional high-school stereotypes.
Sam is more than just a good-looking jock. He has a quirky side, as seen in his Connery impressions and his Na'vi speech. Sam awkwardly tows the line between seeking popularity and embracing his inner dorkiness, and it's enjoyable to watch.
His family's backstory serves an important vehicle as well. Many viewers know what it's like to struggle during a recession. Why demote his character when they are just finally starting to see this character development?
And we've been waiting two seasons for Mercedes (Amber Riley) to have a legitimate love interest (Anthony Rashad doesn't count!). Why take it away when there is so much potential in this story line? I find this relationship more endearing than Puck and Lauren. Besides, unlike Lauren, Sam can actually sing.
Are the "Glee" writers making a mistake in cutting Chord? Was he an ideal love interest for Mercedes? Are "Blaine and the Pips" getting too much screen time at the expense of New Directions' core members? What career options do you see for him after "Glee?"
