He wasn't born on the fourth of July (try the third of July!), but as actor Tom Cruise gets set to turn 50, he may need more than birthday cake to lift his spirits.
The "Rock of Ages" star is in the middle of a divorce battle with soon-to-be ex wife Katie Holmes, amid reports that Holmes feared that Cruise was planning to send their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, to live at a hardcore Scientology organization.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Cruise's longtime legal representative, Bert Fields, said of the divorce proceedings:"I would hope that it's not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person." (Holmes, 33, has reportedly retained prominent New York lawyer Allan E. Mayefsky and New Jersey divorce lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe.)
But even though Katie's bringin' on the heartbreak (the actor was said to be blindsided and "deeply saddened" that his wife filed for divorce), it's still time for Tom to celebrate! You only turn 50 once, after all, so here's a look back at 5 of Tom's happier moments with Katie:
Screaming From the Couch-Tops
The year was 2005 and the setting was "The Oprah Winfrey Show." This is where Tom Cruise declared his love for then-girlfriend Katie Holmes. But this was no ordinary love story. Amid over-the-top fist pumping and high fiving, an animated Tom Cruise dished "I'm in love!" before jumping on O's couch. Viewers thought he had a screw loose, but it was happy day for TomKat-- and Oprah's ratings.
A Decent Proposal
In June, 2005, Tom proposed to Katie at the Eiffel Tower. At a Paris news conference, he announced: "It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all. Today is a magnificent day for me. I'm engaged to a magnificent woman." Cruise said he chose the famous Paris landmark because "it's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."
April 2006 marked the birth of the couple's blue-eyed, bouncing baby girl, Suri. (The name means "princess" in Hebrew.) According to People, the 7 pound, 7 ounces Suri was born just down the hall from where Brooke Shields gave birth to her daughter Grier. (Cruise famously dissed Shields' use of prescription meds for postpartum depression, but later apologized to the actress.) Pal Kirstie Alley said, "Tom does everything 150 percent, and fatherhood he does 300 percent. They're going to have a great kid."
And talk about fireworks! In November 2006, Cruise and Holmes were married in a double-ring Scientology ceremony in a medieval castle in Bracciano, Italy. According to People, the menu included sea bass with artichokes, parmesan-crusted filet and red Barbesco wine and champagne, while dessert was a five-tiered, white chocolate mousse cake decorated with marzipan roses. Guests included Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith-- and yes, even Brooke Shields and her husband Chris Henchy. At the end of the night, the festivities culminated with a fireworks display.
Three years into their marriage, the happy couple was still going out on date nights. In 2009, Cruise took his wife for a flight on his P-51 Mustang, a fighter plane from World War II. Katie told In Style Magazine that her "manly romantic" hubby even painted the words "Kiss Me, Kate" on the side of the plane. Unfortunately for Tom, now she has given him the kiss-off.
