Actor Taylor Kitsch is finally about to hit it big in Hollywood thanks to two large blockbusters hitting theaters in 2012. It's not the first time the Canadian born actor was in a blockbuster, as he also starred as the mutant Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." However, things are different now as Kitsch headlines the March theatrical release of "John Carter" as well as "Battleship," later in the summer.
Kitsch began his career as a model in New York, working for companies like Abercrombie & Fitch and Liz Claiborne, before finally landing his first acting gigs. Since then, he has slowly built a solid body of acting work. He joins a nice list of fellow models turned successful actors over the years.
Before Tom Welling became the new Superman on TV's "Smallville," he was a fashion model. Welling got his start working for Abercrombie & Fitch, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and more. The modeling exposure led to him getting his first acting gig on "Judging Amy," which eventually led to his breakout role, where he portrayed Superman for ten years.
Arguably the most famous case of a model turned star actor is Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg began his rise to fame when he started a career as the lead singer of the band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. He moved on to a successful modeling career, best known for his underwear modeling for Calvin Klein. The former Marky Mark turned that success into a fresh acting career in 1993.
Ashton Kutcher, a pop culture icon of his own making, worked as a model before getting his big break on the television series, "That '70s Show." He started his modeling career when he competed in the International Modeling and Talent Association Convention (IMTA) in 1997, losing to Josh Duhamel. Kutcher went on to model for Calvin Klein and Abercrombie & Fitch.
Duhamel beat out the future Mr. Demi Moore for the title of Male Model of the Year in 1997 at the IMTA. Since that award, he went on to find roles in music videos and television shows before earning his breakout role on the TV series, "Las Vegas." He has since made the headlines thanks to his marriage to Black Eyed Peas star, Fergie.
Channing Tatum had an interesting start to his career. He started out working as a male stripper before he moved down to Florida and a modeling scout discovered him. He found success with work for Abercrombie & Fitch, Nautica, American Eagle Outfitters and Armani. Since then, he has built a solid film career, including the recent romantic drama, "The Vow."
