Star Trek Beyond Director Unveils First Image

It’s official – ‘Star Trek 3’ will be called ‘Star Trek Beyond’. And director Justin Lin has just given us our first glimpse.

Appearing on Twitter, the 43-year-old ‘Star Trek’ director has given us a first look from the set of ‘Star Trek Beyond’. But while he confirms the film will be called ‘Star Trek Beyond’, it doesn’t really tell us much else.

“Let the next Starfleet voyage begin!,” he said, “#StarTrekBeyond #LLAP”

And along with his tweet was this rather awesome image – presumably a close-up from one of the Enterprise crewmen’s uniforms.

Of course, the title ‘Star Trek Beyond’ has been rumoured for some time already… but this is the first time we’ve seen it confirmed by somebody close to the project. And with justice Lin at the helm, it couldn’t get any more concrete than that.

But what does this cool image tell us about ‘Star Trek Beyond’?

Actually… not much at all. In fact, we still know very little about the upcoming ‘Star Trek’ sequel, on the whole. Although we’ve been repeatedly told that it will follow the Enterprise on its five-year mission, the details remain tightly under wraps. The general feel of the film is said to be less Star-Trek-y… but whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen.

Aside from a returning cast comprising of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban amongst others, we do know that they’ll be joined by Idris Elba in a villainous role, as well as ‘Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella in an unknown part.

Will ‘Star Trek Beyond’ boldly go where no Trek movie has gone before, or will it be much of the same?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But with Justin Lin at the helm, I’ve got a very good feeling about this.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
