Reese Witherspoon's new BFF has a grandma who lives in a palace.
The "Water for Elephants" star struck up a friendship with the woman formerly known as Kate Middleton when the British newlywed visited Southern California with Prince William in July. The two long-legged beauties reportedly email and chat by phone, no doubt complaining about their new husbands leaving their dirty socks on the floor.
The pretty pair share more than sparkly new wedding bands. For one thing, both of them are wild about Witherspoon's movies. "Two of Kate's favourite movies are 'Walk The Line' and 'Legally Blonde,'" a source told In Touch.
The southern belle and British duchess are also do-gooders. They met at a charity lunch to launch the Tusk Trust's US Patron's Circle, a group dedicated to protecting wildlife and alleviating human poverty in Africa.
What the new mates have most in common, though, is their public image as good girls. Both are proper ladies who do act liked over-aged teenagers or dress to make men drool.
Witherspoon even spoke up about the value of embracing one's inner angel when she accepted her MTV Generations Award in June, promising to raise the coolness quotient of being a good girl. "I get it, girls, that it's cool to be a bad girl," she said. "But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show. When I came up in this business, if you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed and you hid it under your bed." With her new royal friendship, Witherspoon's coolness campaign seems to be working.
Ironically, the Duchess of Cambridge has recently taken some lumps for being too ladylike from the likes of Kelly Osbourne and Vivienne Westwood. The rocker's daughter lambasted Will's new wife for recycling her clothes, while the aging punk fashion designer scorned her common look. "It seems to me, that her image is 'ordinary woman.' Therefore, High Street shopper," said Westwood. "And I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from.'
The synergy of a Witherspoon-Middleton friendship could boost both of their stocks in the celebrity world. The blonde actress will benefit from her friend's royal cachet and Middleton will sparkle more brightly from her chum's reflected starlight.
Duchess Catherine has been prudent about keeping away from less popular actresses, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, whose stuck-up image could make the new duchess seem like a royal snob. Though both live in Britain, chances are they won't be drinking tea or organic wine together unless Paltrow pays to attend a charity benefit at which Kate appears. The British ex-pat forked over $35K to be in the same room as Barack Obama last week.
