‘Point Break’ First Trailer: Johnny Utah Rides Again

The first trailer for the Point Break remake finally has dropped, bringing with it a combination of nostalgia and extreme sports sure to warm the hearts of people still pining for the Kathryn Bigelow-directed original starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

As in the original, Point Break centers on a novice FBI agent named Johnny Utah, who goes undercover with a group of rebellious thrill-seekers led by the charismatic Bodhi, to investigate a series of daring crimes pulled off by people with experience in extreme athletics. While the 1991 original focused on the surf scene and parachuting, the remake broadens the focus to include a wider range of sports including wingsuit flying, snowboarding, free rock-climbing, motorcycling and, yes, surfing. As seen in the trailer, it also expands the setting from Southern California to locations around the world. There is no indication, yet anyway, that anyone utters the immortal line “I am an FBI agent!” — but hope springs eternal.

From Warner Bros and Alcon Entertainment, Point Break stars Édgar Ramírez (Zero Dark Thirty) as Bodhi and Luke Bracey (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Johnny Utah, along with Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer and Delroy Lindo. Ericson Core directs from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer. It hits theaters on Christmas Day with a wide release.
