It's Academy Award season again which inevitably means a flurry of activity in Hollywood as stars are on the hunt for the perfect gown for the big night. Nothing dresses up better than a basic black gown blinged out to the max to ensure a star makes it onto the best dressed lists.
Here's a look at some of the celebrities who have gone with basic black at the Academy Awards in recent years:
Reese Witherspoon: The newlywed went with retro chic for the 2011 Academy Awards. For the big night, the Oscar winner channeled 60's glamour in a black-and-white Giorgio Armani Prive strapless gown. The blond bouffant capped off the look with pure retro flare!
Camila Alves: The "Shear Genius" host definitely knows that basic black can make a major statement! For the 2011 Oscars, the Brazilian beauty went with a simple black gown by Kaufman Franco with a plunging neckline to accompany her fiance Matthew McConaughey down the red carpet.
Sharon Stone: The actress rocked a feather adorned one-shoulder gown by Christian Dior for the 2011 Academy Awards. Unfortunately, her hair and makeup were a total mismatch leaving the actress showing her age.
Busy Philipps: For her first trip to the Academy Awards as the date of former "Dawson's Creek" co-star MIchelle Williams' date, the "Cougar Town" went for an all-glam black fishtail gown. It was a bit much, but seems to fit her bubbly personality perfectly.
Helena Bonham Carter: She's not exactly known for her fashion hits, but the British actress impressed us by wearing a conservative black ensemble designed by "Alice in Wonderland" costume designer Colleen Atwood.
