Move over Selena and Sofia! There's a new designer in town and she comes bearing barbz. Former "American Idol" judge Nicki Minaj has found something to do on her permanent vacation from the TV talent show: The outspoken rapper is set to launch her very own clothing line for Kmart, and it's coming soon.
MTV posted a behind-the-scenes promo video of the 30-year-old "Super Bass" singer's new line, which includes clothing that's as colorful as her commentary. Pieces in the collection include mini dresses, big hats, wildly printed leggings, neon puffer vests, bomber jackets, and studded bustiers.
"I'm doing this for women in general to feel beautiful and sexy, and any woman can wear it and feel confident," Nicki said. (We'll take her word for it on the belly-baring bustiers.) "There are some dresses that I'm obsessing over already, just the shapes of them. They tuck you in in the right places and enhance the right places."
The line will share store space with clothing lines from Selena Gomez and Sofia Vergara. But how will the rapper's line compare?
Vergara, whose Kmart line includes everything from dresses and jackets to animal print pumps, has added a shapewear collection that promises to bring sexy back to soccer moms.
The "Modern Family" star told Women's Wear Daily, "Shapewear has always been a part of a woman's wardrobe, but I wanted it to look cute, not like a horrible girdle. It's for the everyday woman who wants to look good without spending a lot of money on shapewear, earrings or high heels that make her look cute and sexy."
Meanwhile, Selena Gomez's line is more junior-friendly. Her "Dream Out Loud" collection, which launched in 2010, includes boho tops, tanks, stretchy skirts, and a slew of accessories aimed at the teen crowd.
As for Nicki Minaj's clothing line, at a press conference earlier this year she revealed plans to keep things sexy, in a subtle way.
"I've been doing a lot of dresses lately, and I feel like I'm more confident when I look like this," she said. "It doesn't have to be super over-the-top sexy. Some of the dresses I've been doing lately are completely covered-like the sweater dresses-and my fans have really responded to it. But I've just been feeling so romantic and sexy lately, so dresses have to be in the line."
And while she added, "I've always loved humongous earrings, bamboo earrings… I tend to love animal print… I love pops of color, so I definitely want to have some neons in there that just make you feel bad," the rapper-turned-designer added one important caveat: "My big thing is that it cannot look cheesy and cheap, and that is what I want to give my beautiful Barbz."
