Matthew McConaughey Talks About Dropping Weight for New Role: His Best Roles so Far
Actor Matthew McConaughey will look dramatically different when his new movie "The Dallas Buyers Club" comes out next year. The actor dropped almost 40 pounds to play the role of an AIDS patient in the highly anticipated drama. With the weight loss, there is no doubt that this role will mark the most dramatic transformation yet for the actor. Matthew opened up about the difficult process of losing weight, including the lack of energy he had early in the process. Lucky for him, he now feels comfortable in his slimmed down frame. "Once you get past the plateau, your body seems to understand, 'OK, this is where we're leaving now, this is where we are,' and so the energy rises." Hopefully, Matthew's hard work will be rewarded with another strong role. The actor has had a number of great ones over the years, and here is a look at three of his best.
David Wooderson - "Dazed and Confused"
No matter how many more movies Matthew does, he will have a hard time topping his iconic line from this coming-of-age classic. At one point in the movie, his character says "That's what I love about these high school girls man. I get older, they stay the same age." That is easily the best of his many great lines from this film, and one that will always be associated with him. Even without that line, the fun-loving Wooderson would still rank as one of the actor's greatest roles.
Jake Brigance - "A Time to Kill"
This 1996 legal thriller helped establish Matthew as a strong dramatic actor. He stars as a Southern lawyer tasked with defending a man that kills two bigots that raped his daughter. The movie is full of talented actors like Sandra Bullock and Samuel L. Jackson, but Matthew still manages to stand out in the leading role. For proof that the man can act, look no further than the emotional speech he gives during the closing arguments. That alone shows that he is more than just guy that can carry a romantic comedy.
Coach Jake - "We Are Marshall"
Plenty of notable actors have played coaches in sports films, and Matthew took his turn in this 2006 movie about the Marshall football team. He plays Jake Lengyel, a man who tries to rebuild the Marshall football program after a plane crash kills nearly everyone involved in it. Matthew's spirited performance is a nice complement to the already emotional story, and it's hard not to feel his optimism coming through the screen. The actor does an excellent job of conveying the necessary sadness involved while also leaving us a lot to feel inspired about.
