The world was stunned last week, when a mere month after a seemingly happy 7-year wedding anniversary, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony called it quits.
"We have decided to end our marriage," the couple announced last week. "This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters." (a.k.a., the tedious division of assets was all squared away before the big announcement, which leads their fans to head scratching and much confusion. American Idol, a live-taped show, portrayed the couple as too-cute-for-words and the Latin couple performed quite the steamy number on the show's finale less than two months ago.)
So what went wrong?
Top 5 Reasons Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony Called it Quits:
Living In Her Shadow
2011 has been a stellar year for Jennifer Lopez. From a chart-topping album featuring sexy dance hits, a judge's seat on one of the most popular shows on television (this season boasted the highest views and votes in "American Idol" history), and a massive feature as People's Most Beautiful Woman in the World, 'Jenny from the block' has come a long way.
A Control Freak and a Diva
We have all heard the rumors of Jennifer's diva-licious ways, though this season of "American Idol" showcased a very different side of Lopez. The side you wanted to be best friends with.
Other reports paint a picture of a husband bent on control. "He's very, very controlling of her," a source told the Daily Mail. "He doesn't like it when she takes pictures without him, or even when she leaves a room without him."
And worse still, violent tempers. "They love hard; they fight hard -- and sometimes that has led to pushing and shoving," reports an insider. "They throw things and scream and just go bananas. It's been war in their house! [Anthony] can be really mean. He's a macho guy with a horrible temper and can say awful things."
Once A Cheater, Always a Cheater?
Let's face it, most of us can read between the lines, and back in 2004 as Jennifer and Marc were heating up amidst statements referencing his "ending a marriage" with former Miss Universe, Dayanara Torres, no one actually believed J and M had hooked up when he was a completely single guy.
Marc married Miss Universe, then he married the World's Most Beautiful Woman, is he on to better and more beautiful? Does that even exist?
The Show Must Go On
Perhaps all of it was for show. Anthony held serious star credentials of his own in the Latin American music market, but many stateside had never heard that name or that voice. Anthony's very public break-up (sayonara, Dayanara) and hook-up (hello, silver screen) put Anthony on the map.
And if more proof was needed of the power couple's Hollywood drive, just days after announcing their shocking split, Marc and Jennifer confirmed that they would in fact continue to work together on their upcoming music-based reality show, "Q'Viva! The Chosen," with Simon Fuller, the creator of "American Idol."
Celebrity Marriages Have A Shelf Life and They Were Long Overdue
A long running marriage in show biz is a decade. A good effort can make it to three years. The proud parents of twins, Max and Emme, made it a whopping seven years. In Hollywood terms, that's staying power.
And here's one last theory to chew on, like every good JLo movie, her true knight in shining armor, Sean Combs (P. Diddy, or whatever his name of the week is) has been patiently waiting in the wings to reclaim his Puerto Rican princess, and they'll live happily ever after. A girl can dream.
