Last night's "Dancing With the Stars" results show featured performances by Brad Paisley, Andrea Bocelli & Jennifer Lopez, as well as an AT&T Spotlight Performance.
This week's bottom 2 was relatively predictable. Low-scoring couples Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold, Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko landed in the bottom, with Lisa and Gleb going home.
I was a bit surprised to see Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess in the bottom 3 while D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke were granted yet another reprieve. On the other hand, we don't know if this was the true bottom 3. The producers could have simply put Andy in jeopardy for dramatic effect in order to motivate his fan base.
Other couples returning next week are Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas, Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy, Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough, Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson, Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff, Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd.
Here's a look at what else we learned from this week's results show.
Val Chmerkovskiy Is a Class Act
Val and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are equally hunky, but Val seems to have to have a sweeter temper than his more abrasive brother.
This week, Twitter fans chose Val and Karina as the pros they wanted to see perform. In a gesture of good sportsmanship, Val thanked the fans, but also pointed out that all the pros were amazing, and that it was unfair for any of them to be singled out.
This is quite a contrast from Maks' comments about how "it's my show!"
Derek Hough Is Almost Likable This Season(!)
There's been some strong anti-Derek backlash from the fans lately, and some of it is justified. People are sick of seeing him consistently paired with the best dancers, while pros like Tony Dovolani and Tristan MacManus are always getting the shaft.
Derek and Shawn Johnson also rubbed viewers the wrong way last season with what came across as a sense of entitlement and attitude that they were above the rules.
However, while I'm not a fan of Derek, I have to admit that he's almost likable this season. He and Kellie Pickler have a sweet fun chemistry, like brother and sister. And Derek showed some refreshing humanity this week when he got choked up after performing with Brilynn Rakes, a legally blind dancer who had overcome many obstacles to achieve success.
Bruno Tonioli Hears Voices In His Head
In a mock fluff piece, viewers had a behind-the-scenes look at Bruno's writers, the guys who were feeding him his signature over-the-top critiques and off-color metaphors. Of course, it turned out that these writers didn't exit.
Apparently Bruno really does hear voices inside his head, just not those kinds of voices.
Tom Bergeron Has God-Like Powers Over The Sound System
During the results show, there was a funny little moment when Tom addressed the bottom 2. Right before revealing the name of the eliminated contestant, he verbally commanded the the sound crew to "cue the dramatic music."
Right on cue, the dramatic music began. Who knew that Tom had such god-like powers over the sound system?
Fans Don't Like To Watch Ailing Dancers
I was not surprised too see Victor and Lindsay, and Lisa and Gleb in the bottom 2. However, I would have expected Victor to leave before Lisa.
Victor had the disadvantage of performing early in the evening, while Lisa had gone last. I also expected her to pick up some sympathy votes because of this week's medical mishaps. Instead, the boxer lived to fight another week while the "Real Housewife" was sent home.
Given the way Dorothy Hamill graciously bowed out of the competition a few weeks ago, I have to wonder if Lisa's drama rubbed viewers the wrong way. While she may have legitimately been ailing, the events surrounding her fainting spell felt a bit staged.
It's never fun to watch an injured or ailing dancer, so it seems like the viewers were just trying to put Lisa out of her misery by voting her off.
Will Andy continue to grow in this competition? Did D.L. dodge another bullet this week? Will Victor be able to survive another week? Could anti-Derek backlash hurt Kellie this season? Or is he becoming likable again?
