Now that the news that Kim Kardashian is having a girl has sunk in, it's time to talk about something else that happened on the season premiere of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." Kim announced to her fans that she plans to eat her placenta!
During her ultrasound, the reality star quizzed her doctor about the practice of placenta eating. "Don't you think it makes you look younger?" she asked. She then proclaimed, "I really want to do it." Other celebs have talked about eating placenta in the past, but we've never seen a claim that the practice turns back the clock. However, Kim must get her medical info from a strange source since she also believes that breast milk can cure psoriasis.
Speaking of other celebs and eating placenta, here's a look at what a few other stars have said about the strange new trend:
Some fans thought this "Mad Men" star was a mad woman for ingesting her placenta in capsule form, but the actress told Glamour U.K. that the practice is "not gross or witch-crafty." She also claimed that it can help with depression or fatigue, saying this of her own experience: "I was never depressed or sad or down after the baby was born, so I'd highly suggest it to any pregnant woman."
However, while the placenta is full of nutrients, some experts think that it's irresponsible and dangerous to claim that the pills can treat post-partum depression.
This "Girls Next Door" star had a similar reason for wanting to consume placenta pills. She wrote on her blog, "I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!" We don't know if she actually went through with her plan to take the pills, but she did recover quickly enough to drop 30 pounds just two months after giving birth.
Holly's former co-star isn't so keen on the idea of placenta eating. Kendra told People, "All I have to say is, 'Are we Hannibal Lecter or something?' What is in it to eat a placenta? I think that sounds sickening." Good thing she and Holly are no longer housemates.
Tia and Tamera Mowry
Tamera is one celeb who did decide to consume her placenta, and she shockingly got twin sister Tia to try a taste of it, too. In a somewhat Hannibal Lecter-like move, Tia mixed her sister's placenta with a little brandy, and she actually branded the concoction "kind of good." The twins captured the moment on their reality show, so Kim Kardashian will need to come up with a stunt that tops theirs. Perhaps she should consider cooking her placenta and getting Kanye West to try a few bites. Shockingly, there are actually recipes on the Internet for dishes like placenta pizza.
However, Kim better store her placenta carefully to make sure that someone doesn't mistake it for a juicy steak. According to Cindy Crawford, she was storing her placenta in the refrigerator for a planned "spiritual planting ceremony" when her hubby Rande Gerber mistook it for food. The plastic container that the placenta was in was labeled "afterbirth," so Gerber thought that it contained what he was supposed to eat "after birth." Luckily, he realized his mistake before throwing it on the grill.
This funny lady also had a funny experience with mistaking her placenta for meat. The "Bridesmaids" star gave birth to her second child at home, so her placenta couldn't be disposed of properly. Here's what she told People about where it turned up: "You have to put the placenta somewhere and I didn't know it at the time, but someone put it in my freezer. Then a couple of weeks later I opened the freezer and was like, 'What is that weird meat?' Apparently a lot of cultures eat it. I did not do that, so don't worry, I'm not a weirdo."
Evan Rachel Wood
Evan joked about being the biggest "weirdo" of them all during an interview with "E! News." She quipped, "I'm gonna keep the placenta and eat the baby. If you think the placenta makes you feel good, just wait. I mean, this is like eternal life."
"The Big Bang Theory" star doesn't think that parenting practices like placenta eating are any laughing matter. In a kveller.com blog post, the attachment parenting advocate wrote, "I ingested my placenta. I am not a bad person, a crazy person, or a freak and neither is Alicia Silverstone or January Jones." Mayim also mentioned Alicia because the "Clueless" star made the Internet gag by sharing a video that showed her spitting chewed food into her baby's mouth. At least she wasn't feeding him placenta.
So what do you think of the practice of placenta eating?
