Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries' Failed Wedding Birthed A New California Law

Their marriage didn't last long, but one successful thing came out of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' wedding day: A new law.

The now-divorced couple were married at the $20 million estate of Google Executive Chairman Eric E. Schmidt in Montecito, California, in August 2011.

The massive event caused a headache for more than Kardashian and Humphries -- neighbors overloaded the local Santa Barbara County public agencies with complaints.

Due to the laws at that time, the county could only slap Schmidt with a $100 fine for allowing the unpermitted event to take place at his home. The traffic and public resources that were used to deal with the celeb wedding cost taxpayers much more than that -- as in upwards of thousands of dollars more than was covered by the host, who hadn't obtained the proper permits for the ceremony.

Assemblyman Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) put legislature up for approval that would allow cities and counties to fine up to $5,000 for first-time offenders violating local ordinances, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"Taxpayers should not have to pay for extra traffic control and other public safety services for wealthy people who skirt the law," Williams told his colleagues.

The passed bill will likely last far longer than Kardashian and Humphries marriage, which made it a mere 72 days.
