Kelly Osbourne might be an addict, but she's not going to stop drinking if she wants to. The E! "Fashion Police" star revealed to RadarOnline that she did, in fact, get drunk on a plane last week after a fellow passenger asked her about brother Jack Osbourne's Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.
However, the four-time rehab patient said she can handle drinks and it's not out of control.
"If in any way my life appeared unmanageable, if I wasn't showing up to work, I seemed depressed, I was not a professional then I would say yes, my life is unmanageable," she told the website. "I'm 27. I still want to have fun. I don't believe in denying myself the life I want to live. I have to pay for the mistakes I make and I understand that."
It's a slippery slope with addicts: They get confident when they've been sober for a while and thing they can "handle" social drinking or drug use. Osbourne isn't the only celebrity who has bashed rehab, though she might want to rethink her drink when she realizes who else has a "handle" on their drinking or drug use.
"Anger Management" star Charlie Sheen has publicly bashed Alcoholic's Anonymous about as much as he's trashed hotel rooms. Now, the simpler, calmer "MaSheen" is sorry about his epic breakdown in 2011, but he still thinks rehab is crap.
"We live in a country where it's always 'Miller Time' so what are you going to do? It's happy hour somewhere in the world," Sheen said on "Good Morning America" before the Thursday premiere of his new FX show."I don't believe in rehab anymore," he continued. "It's not for me. It's not for everyone. It's not a one-size-fits-all and it didn't fit me."
However, addiction expert Ben Levenson, CEO and co-founder of Origins Recovery Centers, is worried about Sheen's words and behavior.
"If he wants to continue living his life of privilege in the delusion that he can drink and not fall back to his drug of choice, so be it, but, for any real addict, there isn't an 'off' switch," Levenson said.
The late Amy Winehouse built a career on her song about drug use - "Rehab," of course - and art translated into life because she never wanted to get help for her problems.
"I had about a year and a half off and I was drinking a lot. Not anything terrible..," she told CNN in 2007. "[My managers] just kind of stepped in and thought they were being the good guys by stepping in and just strong-arming me into a rehabilitation center, but I just didn't really need it. I knew I was in love," she said.
Sadly, we know how that worked out.
Bobbi Kristina Brown
Bobbi Kristina Brown has had a tough year: She lost her mother, Whitney Houston, and doesn't speak to her father, Bobby Brown. Rumors emerged after Houston's death that Bobbi Kristina took drugs after the funeral and that the family considered putting her into rehab.
"Excuse me," Bobbi Kristina tweeted after the rumors emerged, "but I'd like to say that I am NOT going to rehab? I'm perfectly healthy and I am not addicted to anything but life."
So, either she's being honest, or they haven't been able to make her go yet. Let's hope it's the former.
