Katy Perry has used bras that shoot sparks and whipped cream to entertain her fans, but don't let her wild sense of style fool you -- the "I Kissed a Girl" singer thinks that some of her fellow pop stars have gone too far by getting naked.
During an interview with NPR, Katy revealed her thoughts on the skin-baring trend that so many female pop stars have embraced. Of course she refused to name names, but it's not too hard to figure out who she was talking about. "I'm not talking about anyone in particular," she said. "I'm talking about all of them. I mean, it's like everybody's so naked. It's like put it away. We know you've got it. I got it too. I've taken it off for -- I've taken it out here and there. And I'm not necessarily judging. I'm just saying sometimes it's nice to play that card but also it's nice to play other cards. And I know I have that sexy card in my deck but I don't always have to use that card."
Basically Katy is just saying that certain female singers are getting naked a little too much, and it's safe to say that Miley Cyrus is one of the singers that she was referring to -- after all, Miley did recently get naked for her "Wrecking Ball" music video. Miley might feel a bit miffed after reading Katy's comments, because she recently gushed about how supportive her fellow pop star has been. "For Katy to say that she appreciates what I'm really doing for the pop industry, that keeps you going," Miley told Cosmo.
The former "Hannah Montana" star has inspired other female pop stars to offer similar constructive criticism. According to ET Online, concerned singer Sinèad O'Connor penned an open letter to Miley Cyrus comparing being a musician to being prostituted. "I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way 'cool' to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos," she wrote. She also praised Miley by pointing out that she's a talented young woman who doesn't need to show skin to be successful. "As for the shedding of the 'Hannah Montana' image... whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady," she wrote. "Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She's waaaaaaay gone by now.. Not because you got naked but because you make great records."
Unfortunately, Miley decided to immaturely respond to Sinead's concern and kind words by comparing the Irish singer to troubled actress Amanda Bynes.
Miley also upset another female artist known for her super-short hair. According to Entertainmentwise, "Sweet Dreams" singer Annie Lennox criticized overly-sexualized performances during an interview with BBC Radio 5. "I'm all for freedom of expression, but this is clearly one step beyond, and it's clearly into the realm of porn," she said. She also talked about racy performers being bad role models for their young fans. "You don't want to see your seven-year-old girls twerking all over the place."
Singers aren't the only stars who have criticized female celebs for showing too much skin. According to Us Weekly, "Parks and Recreation" actress Rashida Jones used a Twitter hashtag to tell famous women to "stop acting like whores." "This week's celeb news takeaway: she who comes closest to showing the actual inside of her vagina is most popular," she wrote. However, she didn't say which specific starlet inspired her disapproving tweet.
Interestingly, Miley Cyrus herself once complained about female stars who shed their clothes. "A star is someone who doesn't have to take her clothes off to be sexy because you naturally have star power. Sex does sell, but you have to find a way that's not just showing your t**s," she told ELLE back in April. It looks like she's taken a wrecking ball to that sentiment.
