John Mayer has had a tough time letting go of his onetime flame Jennifer Aniston. When a musician loses love, there is no better chance for them to let it go than by writing a song about it. A source explained to Us Weekly that "'Shadow Days' is about Jen." The source continued by saying, "It really took him a long time to get over her. He really loved her a lot."
The two dated from 2008-2009 and Aniston moved on to Justin Theroux.
"Well I ain't no troublemaker / And I never meant her harm / But it doesn't mean I didn't make it hard to carry on," Mayer sings in his new song. If this is a goodbye to a former love, it is one of many over the history of music and not all of them have been so nice.
One of the more biting breakup songs has to be the Alanis Morissette song, "You Oughta Know," from her Grammy winning album Jagged Little Pill. The song itself talks about some of the more risqué parts of her relationship with comedian Dave Coulier, one of the lead actors from the classic sitcom "Full House."
Morissette sings, "And I'm here, to remind you / Of the mess you left when you went away / It's not fair, to deny me / Of the cross I bear that you gave to me" With those words, one of the angriest breakup songs became a worldwide hit.
"I listened to the song over and over again, and I said, 'I think I have really hurt this person,'" Coulier said about the track.
Adele has made a career out of writing songs about lost love. Her first big hit to recall a past relationship was "Chasing Pavements" on 19.
"I had a fight in a club with the boy the album's about, and then I ran off down the street," Adele explained in an interview. "I was just running away. I remember saying to myself, 'What you're chasing is you're chasing an empty pavement.' It's a metaphor. It's impossible to chase a pavement but I was chasing that pavement."
It was just the start with breakup songs like "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" making the British singer the biggest star in the world.
In an interesting twist to the broken love story, Taylor Swift released two lost love songs about the same person on her third album Speak Now. "The Story of Us" and "Dear John" both talk about lost love and speculation has always been that the songs are about John Mayer, who dated the young country star.
"It's sort of the last e-mail you'd send to somebody you used to be in a relationship with," Swift said about "Dear John." "You would just write it to know that you said what you needed to say and not send it. But I guess putting the song on the album is pushing send."
