JJ Abrams Broke His Back On Star Wars 7 Set

It turns out that Harrison Ford wasn’t the only person injured on the set of ‘Star Wars VII’… as J.J. Abrams reveals he broke his back while trying to help Ford with his injury.

During an interview with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show (via Entertainment Weekly), the ‘Star Wars VII’ director explained that while helping Harrison Ford on set, he managed to injure himself, too.

“This door had gone down, and I’m trying to help lift it up – because that’s the kind of guy I am. I’m trying to lift up this door and I feel this pop in my back. I’m like ‘Uh, that’s weird’.”

Harrison Ford’s now-infamous injury occurred on the set of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ when the door of the Millennium Falcon inadvertently crushed his leg – resulting in the ‘Star Wars’ superstar taking an extended period of time off to recuperate from a broken leg.

But Abrams soon found himself forced to see a doctor… and the news wasn’t too good.

“He goes, ‘Oh you have a broken back’,” Abrams said. “I broke my L4 trying to lift this door.”

The director explained that while Harrison Ford healed fairly quickly, Abrams himself was forced to wear a back brace during filming.

“I felt like the most nebbishy Jewish director ever,” Abrams joked, before bursting into a Woody Allen impression. “He’s a Miracle Man, and I’m like, ‘Excuse me, Mr. Darth Vader, could you be more evil?’”

And when it came to the incident itself, it sounds as though Harrison handled it exactly how we might expect.

“The guy is like a real-life superhero,” he said of Harrison Ford. “He should have the Marvel logo above his name. “He’s down there and he’s toughing it out. He’s a super human being. He’s literally lying there making jokes.”

Thankfully, both actor and director have since made a full recovery. But next time, perhaps J.J. should leave the heavy lifting to a wookiee.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
