Jessica Alba’s Honest Company’s Sunscreen Reportedly Leads To Awful Burns

Oh dear, oh dear.

Actress Jessica Alba founded The Honest Company with the assurance for her customers that their products are “Effective • Safe • Delightful.”

The very premise that the company is founded upon is that their wares are ethically and morally sound, with no nasty ingredients, as well as being able to do what they say on the tin.

Bad news then, that a number of customers have been reporting some rather epic failures by The Honest Company’s suncream to protect them and their children from severe sunburn.

Most shockingly, as Jessica Alba’s company is largely concerned with selling products that are useable by children, many of the reported burns victims are youngsters.

An investigation by NBC5 in Chicago appears to have uncovered the root of the problem.

It revealed that the company had reduced the levels of zinc oxide in the suncream to 9.3 per cent, when the industry average is between 18 and 25 per cent.

In response to these claims from customers, reps from The Honest Company gave this statement to Buzzfeed:

“The Honest Company is committed to providing safe and effective products, and we take all consumer feedback very seriously. Our Sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products. The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA’s highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed (Shake Well. Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying and at least every 2 hours). The number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitute less than one half of one percent of all units actually sold at honest.com. We stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product.”
