Celeb watchers will remember that Brad Pitt once promised that he and his longtime love, Angelina Jolie, would not get married until all people had the right to marry whomever they want. Indeed, the popular Hollywood couple have yet to marry. Now, the actor has spoken up about his delight that New York passed a law that allows for same-sex marriages. The New York Times announced that the law will go into effect by late July 2011.
As reported by People, Brad declared, "It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens. But it is each American's Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit. No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage."
Anne Hathaway, the lovely star of films such as "The Devil Wears Prada," joined several other celebrities in signing a letter to Barack Obama that urged him to support gay marriage. Others who signed the letter included Martin Sheen, Rufus Wainwright, and Jane Lynch.
Dolly Parton has often spoken out about her unabashed affinity for her gay fan base. When she was asked about her beliefs on "The Joy Behar Show," she was quick to agree that we should be free to marry whoever we want! Dolly responded with a smile, "I always say, 'Sure, why can't they get married? They should suffer like the rest of us do,'" as reported by The Advocate.
Olivia Newton-John, who performed on June 25, 2011, at the NYC Gay Pride event on Governor's Island, New York. She dedicated her song, "Magic," to the LGBT community in honor of the new law that was passed to allow for gay marriage. She exclaimed to fans, "I have many gay friends that I love and care about, and I am so happy that they can now share their lives with their chosen loved ones and be afforded the same rights as other married couples."
