Nicki Minaj wasn't kidding!
The freshman "American Idol" judge has already announced that a male singer has no chance of winning the long-running singing competition this season, and she looks to be right -- even though the show doesn't end until May!
In what can only be described as Motor City madness, 18-year-old singer Devin Velez was booted off of the show on Thursday night, despite the fact that he charmed the judges with his Spanglish singing. Velez sang the Motown hit "The Tracks Of My Tears" during the show's Motor City-themed night, and while that performance went fine, his earlier group performance of the song "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" with fellow contestants Burnell Taylor and Lazaro Arbos went horribly awry, with Minaj later screaming, "Don't ever do that again! All three of you, go. Go! Get off the stage!" In-house mentor Jimmy Iovine referred to the boys' performance as the debut of a new boy band called "Wrong Direction."
Meanwhile, Velez' elimination leaves just two boys left in this year's "Idol" competition, while there are still five female contestants left.
On Thursday's results show, Devin Velez had the opportunity to sing for a chance for the judges to save him, and it was clear that Mariah Carey was campaigning to keep him in the competition. The "Butterfly" singer was visibly upset and crying as Velez performed his last-chance song -- his trademark rendition of Perry Como's "Impossible"-- but the judges didn't unanimously vote to use their save, despite the audience chants to keep the 18-year-old contestant on the show. Even host Ryan Seacrest -- who has seen it all -- was dumbfounded when Randy Jackson announced that the judges wouldn't be using the save on Velez.
In an interview with Zap 2 It, Velez said, "I think I know who didn't want to put me through. She has a lot of girl power. And a lot of girl thoughts -- maybe she just wants a girl to win … I mean, the girls are amazing this year and I have nothing bad to say about any of the contestants."
Velez also noted that after his elimination, three of the four judges came up to wish him luck -- and their names were Mariah, Keith, and Randy.
Meanwhile, what are Devin's future plans? "I'm hoping to go back home and win prom king," he said.
The remaining "American Idol" contestants are Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller, Candice Glover, Janelle Arthur, Kree Harrison, Lazaro Arbos, and Burnell Taylor.
"American Idol" airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8/7c on FOX.
