The buzz surrounding Marilyn Monroe may never expire. The Hollywood icon whose life ended so tragically short is still one of the most recognizable figures in showbiz today. If an actress is blonde and curvy, she's immediately compared to Ms. Monroe. So when pictures surface that have never been released, it's still a really big deal. In the latest issue of Vanity Fair, a new set of six pictures that the public hasn't seen up until now.
The new snaps come courtesy of famous photographer Lawrence Schiller. Schiller's account of the photo shoot that's published in the magazine comes from an excerpt from his new book, "Marilyn & Me: A Photographer's Memories." According to Schiller, the photo shoot got racy because Monroe was upset at how much more attention the raven-haired beauty of the era, Elizabeth Taylor, was getting from the studios. Schiller writes that Marilyn decided to give Schiller some sexy snaps as long as he promised that when the photos published, Liz wouldn't be mentioned or seen in the same issue of any magazine with the pictures on the cover.
Over the years, Marilyn's story has been told and retold on the big and small screen alike. Here now are some of the actresses who stepped into the shoes (and dresses) of the Tinseltown titan.
Lindsay Lohan - Okay, so she didn't portray Marilyn in a film, but for her recent Playboy pictorial, LiLo copped the hair, makeup and style of Monroe. The photo spread, which helped push sales of the issue upward, paid tribute to the famous photo shoot that launched the magazine in the first place, with Lindsay posed nude over a red backdrop. Some of the shots in the pictorial really do make the "Machete" actress look nearly identical to Marilyn.
Ashley Judd & Mira Sorvino - In 1996 a made-for-TV movie called "Norma Jean & Marilyn" was made that attempted to tell the story of how a young actress went from Norma Jean Dougherty to the blonde bombshell. To further illustrate the transition, Judd played Norma Jean, and when the transition to Marilyn was complete, Sorvino took over the role.
Michelle Williams - The former "Dawson's Creek" star and Jason Segel's new girlfriend was the latest actress to play the iconic Monroe on film. In "My Week With Marilyn" Williams takes on the part of Monroe and she did such a good job that she got her third Oscar nomination for her work. Also appearing in the film was Kenneth Branagh as yet another legend of the silver screen, Sir Laurence Olivier.
