Learning From Jennifer Lawrence: Grow Out Your Hair Without the Awkward Stage

Jennifer Lawrence made headlines when she chopped off her signature blond hair in favor of a pixie cut. And now she's making news again for growing it out.

The short, wavy bob, which she showed off in New York City this week to rave reviews, is a grown-out version of the super-short hairstyle she debuted back in November. Naturally, Lawrence makes the awkward reality of growing out a short haircut look easy. But how do noncelebrities weather the in-between stage without Hollywood's best hairstylists on speed dial? Here's what to keep in mind.

Try waves: "When you get to a bob length it's always fun to explore styling options, such as beachy waves and soft curling iron sets," Damian Santiago,  stylist and co-owner of Mizu Salon in New York City, tells Yahoo Shine. "You can even start to braid for a style change." And Jennifer seems to have taken his advice, as she's showing off some spring-ready waves along with her sassy new length.

Go asymmetrical: Another celebrity in the process of growing out her former pixie is Michelle Williams, who is about to make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret." She showed off her slightly longer locks recently in ads for Louis Vuitton, and the choppy, asymmetrical cut is super flattering on her and just about anyone. The trick is to make sure the hair has a few different lengths in order to keep it from looking too bowl-shaped.

Mix colors: Williams also relied on another time-tested strategy for keeping transitional hair interesting: color variation. The mix of blond and brown tones gave her hair major texture, which is always a plus with shorter hair, especially when the lighter shade is the one on top, catching more of the light.

Accessorize: Awkward, in-between hair can look styled with the help of a few accessories, like jeweled pins, bright barrettes, or a Coachella-ready printed wrap. The ever-flawless Lupita Nyong'o accepted her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress while wearing a metallic headband, and the dramatic look suited her dress and accessorized with her award.

Strengthen what you've got: Hair grows about a quarter inch to a half inch per month, and while there are no guarantees that any one product can speed up your growth rate, the stronger your hair, the less likely it is to break at the ends. "There are so many amazing restorative and strengthening treatments available to further help with the growing-out process," says Santiago. He recommends using a follicle-fortifying, nutrient-rich products from companies such as Kerastase or Milbon USA to protect new hair as it grows out. Another thing to remember: Go easy on the hot tools as daily flatironing or blow-drying creates breakage.
