Best friends forever!
After Demi Lovato revealed shocking new details about the extent of her drug use — things became quite ugly to say the least — she's receiving a public display of support from her old pal Selena Gomez. The "Come & Get It" singer posted an Instagram photo of the young women in an embrace while they stood outside in front of festive Christmas lights.
Demi quickly responded to Gomez's pic post, tweeting: "I looooooooooovvvvvveeee you."
The "X Factor" judge can use some extra love this week after she shared for the first time details about her addiction.
"I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," the "Skyscraper" singer confessed on "Access Hollywood" Monday. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it."
Despite having a sober companion to live with her and stay by her side 24/7, she was able to hide her habit until she hit rock bottom at the age of 19.
"I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka and it was just 9 in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to L.A. to the sober living house that I was staying at," she recalled. "I had all the help in the world, but I didn't want it. ... When I hit that moment, I was like, it's no longer fun when you're doing it alone."
After the interview went viral on the Internet Tuesday, Lovato tweeted that there was more to her story — and that she'd soon be sharing it.
"I've been through hell and back, but my story isn't over yet," the "Heart Attack" singer wrote. "I can't wait to talk about the people who have never taken ANY credit for being a huge part of saving my life, and why I'm alive today."
All signs indicate that Gomez is one of those people who helped save Lovato. She's quietly supported her troubled pal — whom she met in 2002 when they were just little Texas girls auditioning to be on "Barney & Friends" — throughout her ordeal. And when Lovato spent time in rehab in 2010, Gomez was reportedly one of the few friends who visited her while she sought treatment.
Not that there weren't difficult times, including a period of estrangement, which Lovato discussed in May.
"We've been through a lot together," she told MTV News. "We've had periods of times where we grew apart and we just didn't really talk. Now we are in a place where I think we realized that life is so short."
Apparently Lovato's stay in rehab brought them closer again.
"Selena called me crying when I was in there and was just so worried,” Demi told TelevisionetMusic in June. "I was like, ‘Look, I should be the one crying, it’s all good!’ But she was so worried and ever since then we’ve gotten closer.”
Gomez's support of Lovato's recovery continues today. When Wilmer Valderrama's gal pal, who also sought treatment for an eating disorder and cutting, recently spoke to a recovery group about her addiction, Gomez accompanied her to provide moral support, according to TMZ.
That's what friends are for, according to Gomez. "I'm very proud of Demi and her being able to accept the challenges she went through, but also for staying a good role model to people who do struggle with the things that she's gone through," she told i-D magazine in August. "I've always been taught that you are who you surround yourself with. So if you surround yourself with good positive people you can only do good things for them and they can only do good things for you."
Well, they are certainly good for each other — as the smiles on their faces in that Instagram photo show.
