Patrick Dempsey may be known for playing Dr. McDreamy on "Grey's Anatomy," but where he dreams at night is inside an eco-friendly tin house that he shares with his wife, Jillian, and three kids (12-year-old daughter Talula, and 7-year-old twin boys Darby and Sullivan). The actor is on the cover of Architectural Digest's March 2014 issue and speaking about his unique home.

He told the mag, "The exterior’s simplicity appealed to me, and the inside felt very expansive and calming. Everywhere you looked there was something visually pleasing."
The actor not only lives in a home that is eco-friendly but also is known for his philanthropic dedication to bringing affordable clean energy through solar power to communities all over the world.
The previous owners of the home appropriately dubbed it "The Tin House," and the Dempseys have embraced its history, posting the name next to their front door. Johnston Design Group's owner, Scott Johnston, who focuses on sustainability, opened up to "The Insider" about why a tin home is more eco-sustainable, saying, "I have found that natural metal roofs and siding such as zinc or tin offer advantages for sustainable solutions on several levels. This roof and tin siding surfaces are an excellent choice for rainwater collection while also providing an opportunity to integrate concealed solar thermal collectors for water and space heating." He added, "Tin and zinc roofs and siding are highly durable and easily recyclable — reducing future impacts on landfills."
Dempsey's Malibu retreat is approximately 5,000 square feet and is designed by award-winning architect Frank Gehry, who famously designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Dempsey purchased the home in 2010 for $7 million and has made eco-friendly changes to fit his family's green lifestyle.

He converted a riding arena into an area where his wife could pursue her interest in organic gardening. In addition to their commitment to an environmentally friendly lifestyle, the Dempseys share a love for animals. They have a chicken coop, which is made of recycled wood, and a small zoo that includes miniature donkeys, rabbits, goats, pigs, and a rescued African tortoise. The family apparently loves sports too, as they also added a flat lawn for soccer games.
