The 23-year-old totaled his black Porsche by slamming his car into a wall the day before the Grammys. He was the only person in the car and had no injuries. When police arrived on the scene, the R&B singer told them “he was being chased by paparazzi causing him to lose control of his vehicle,” the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement.
The singer’s rep described the scenario as an “aggressive pursuit,” but Brown told E! News during their red carpet coverage of the Grammy Awards that “a couple of crazy things” caused the accident.
“Paparazzi tend to get out of hand,” he said. “It's all good, though. No injuries.” A moment later, he joked, “I’ll get another one. Insurance is good.”
The photographers are telling a different story, saying they had nothing to do with the incident.
Chris Doherty, the owner of INF whose photographers were on the scene, told TMZ he’s sure of it, pointing out that they only arrived after the accident had already occurred.
“No photographers were following him at the time he crashed,” Doherty explained. “He crashed his car and it’s convenient for him to blame us. He needs to be careful with his defamatory statements."
In the meantime, however, a rep for Brown tells TMZ they “plan on seeking criminal charges and holding them civilly liable.”
Regardless of where the truth lies in this series of events – or how you may feel about Brown in general – there’s no denying the danger involved in dealing with the paparazzi. Just last month, a photographer was killed trying to take pictures of who he thought was Justin Bieber getting pulled over in his white Ferrari. One of the singer’s friends was actually driving the car.
