Red-Carpet Kerry Washington looks stunning in Glamour (Peggy Sirota)
Like the character she plays on the breakout hit series, "Scandal," Kerry Washington is a complex woman with many sides to her personality.
That said, we don't always see all of them, which is why it's so remarkable that the actress recently opened up to Glamour magazine's Cindi Lieve, shedding some light on her lesser-known traits and revealing a bit more about what kind of person this star truly is.
Perhaps most surprising is what she has coined Red-Carpet Kerry: the part of her that has mastered fashion, but not without some effort. Washington admits that she wasn't always so comfortable working the carpet, and she made a conscious decision to change that.
"There were a couple of actresses whom I felt were having the upper hand careerwise — because they knew how to work that red carpet," she admits. "I was like, 'I'm missing a really important tool. If I am the CEO of the Kerry Washington Corporation, my marketing department is really lax.' So I sort of developed a new character: Red-Carpet Kerry."

Because she had formerly identified herself as "Good-Student Kerry," the actress approached this challenge in a fairly academic and methodical way.
"I researched her like any other character," Washington recalls. "I actually called Tracee Ellis Ross [the actress and Diana Ross's daughter], who’s a good friend, and literally asked, 'How do you pronounce Hermès?' Red-Carpet Kerry needed to know." Eventually, the work became fun, however. "I was doing library hours on fashion. And then it happened — I was in love," she explains.
But Red-Carpet Kerry and Good-Student Kerry still hardly scratch the surface of this multifaceted thesp, who argues that her real friends know the truth. "They know that Red-Carpet Kerry is a version of Kerry, and they know that DNC Speaker Kerry is me," she muses.
Hush-Hush Kerry (Peggy Sirota)
Kerry recently spoke to "omg! Insider" co-host Kevin Frasier about that political version of herself. "I'm in this stadium full of tens of thousands of people and there is no character to hide behind. I was speaking from my heart. I was speaking as myself about my own convictions and my own beliefs," she explained. "Being an actor forces you to think about how other people see things, and I think that is a gift."
And while Kerry has opened up considerably, there's still one aspect of her personality she keeps under tight wraps: her personal life. She recently tied the knot with San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha without any press around or even aware that they were dating, clearly no small feat when you're a hot ticket on Hollywood's radar.
"I don't want to sound smug about it … but the point is to do what's best for me," she reveals. "I have girlfriends in this business who talk about their personal lives, and it works for them, and I love it. But not for me."
While she doesn't name this particular personality, we've decided to label it Hush-Hush Kerry. Now the only hard part is deciding which one of these many versions of Washington we like the very best.
