Beyonce Knowles (British Vogue, May 2013)
In a new interview with British Vogue for their May 2013 issue, when asked about being a feminist she replies that she feels, "That word can be very extreme …"
Later, she reconsiders her stance a bit. "I guess I am a modern-day feminist," the singer continues. "I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I'm just a woman and I love being a woman."
She continues, “'I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it's something that's pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept … But I'm happily married. I love my husband."
And it's not just gender equality that she believes in. Last week during the U.S. Supreme Court hearings for same-sex marriage, Beyoncé tweeted out her own version of the Human Rights Campaign's LGBT equality symbol to her millions of fans. "If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it," she wrote on a red napkin, referencing her hit song, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)."
Beyoncé goes on to talk further about her relationship with Jay-Z and how motherhood has changed the connection she has with her body, the latter of which she began speaking about in her HBO documentary, "Life Is But a Dream," which debuted back in February. "I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I've ever been … It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, 'OK, this is what you were born to do.' The purpose of my body became completely different."
As for her grueling schedule and the toll it takes on her? "I'm always bruised somewhere -- my legs, my hips," she says of the preparations that go into her rigorous physical performances. "But you've already started so you've just gotta fight through it."
Beyonce's 'Bow Down / I Been On' (Beyonce Knowles)
However, could that announcement be on its way this week? Beyoncé posted a new six-second video Wednesday morning on her popular Tumblr blog (via YouTube), which ends with the tail slate, "4.4.2013, 9AM EDT, #BeyHereNow," the latter part of which began trending immediately on Twitter. Beyoncé has made no secret of her affinity for numerology, especially regarding the number "4," which is the date of her birthday, Jay-Z's birthday, and the title of her last album. Tomorrow, April 4, is also the date of her fifth wedding anniversary.
In the brief but quite (Sasha) fierce video, she's wearing her "Single Ladies" glove and turns around to shoot a sharp look towards her audience. Perhaps it's a preview of a new music video?
At one point on her last tour, Beyoncé said her Sasha Fierce alter ego was dead, but at her 2012 Memorial Day concerts she promised a resurrection. Might that be now? The world will find out Thursday morning!
